Do you know more than one language or language variety? Did you know that according to research conducted at the University of Bergen, all students in Norwegian school can be considered as multilinguals? They learn a variety of Norwegian (Bokmål or Nynorsk) or Sami and English from the first school year.
Around 75% of the students decide to learn an additional foreign language from grade 8 and most students with immigrant backgrounds, or born to parents with immigrant backgrounds, know further languages than those taught in the school context. In addition, everyone uses and understands different dialects. And did you know that young people who consider themselves ‘multilingual’ tend to perform better across a wide range of subjects at school, regardless of whether they are fluent in another language? So: Isn’t it the right time to help students identify themselves as multilinguals?
